5. Centralia Ghost Town Church, Centralia, Pennsylvania

Place: Pennsylvania's Centralia The year was 1986. Cost: Approximately $7 million was spent by officials to put out a mine fire that started in the little Pennsylvanian town of Centralia decades ago, but they were unsuccessful. Nobody could be positive, but local legends claimed that the fire started from a mound of trash that ignited coals in the pit.

Centralia, Pennsylvania's Ghost Town Church (@legendsamerica/Pinterest) Due to the fire's ability to release lethal gases into people's homes, the village was abandoned. Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary, a white church that has been abandoned, is currently all that remains in Centralia. It turns out that because this Ukrainian Catholic church was constructed on solid rock rather than coal, it was saved.
